Bananas a-peel to him

Wanting to revive the horticultural society in Daveyton

Daveyton resident Victor Mabaso (72) grows his own bananas in his backyard.

“People have been complaining about the weather, but I’m taking advantage of climate change,” he said.

Mabaso recalls planting his first banana tree in 2000.

“I started by planting one banana and then it multiplied,” he said.

Mabaso said he puts them in an old coal stove to make the bananas ripen faster.

Apart from bananas, Mabaso has a pawpaw and avocado tree in his garden.

Mabaso would like to revive the horticulture society in Daveyton and he would like assistance from ward councillors and the community as a whole.

“I have trees on my lawn which people in the community enjoy sitting under,” he said.

Mabaso plans to continue planting more fruit trees and teaching others how they too can plant trees in their gardens.
