UPDATE: EMPD yet to return ‘stolen’ cars

There is no case open against the suspect.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department has yet to return a number of cars that were allegedly confiscated illegally on October 19.

The City Times reported on February 7 that Byron Viljoen claims his yard was illegally raided.

Early in February, Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said there was no case pending against Viljoen.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said “the EMPD internal affairs has over the past two weeks tried to telephonically make contact with the complainant, to no avail”.

Viljoen said he did not receive a call from the EMPD.

Kgasago also said the head of EMPD internal affairs, Chief Superintendent Hennie Erasmus, physically visited Viljoen’s residence in order to interview him, but failed to see the complainant.

Viljoen said his father and a man employed by the family are “at home most of the time”.

“They said no one came to the house, and if they did they would have known,” he said.

The City Times asked Kgasago to confirm the contact details and address they had for Viljoen, and it was correct.

Kgasago also explained that EMPD internal affairs requested access to the docket on the matter, but access was denied.

“The reason advanced was that the case is soon to be escalated, therefore access to the docket by us is not possible for now,” he said.

Sekele again confirmed on March 1 that there is not a case against Viljoen and that he must go to the station to speak to the investigating officer for information.

She said if the investigating officer is not available, he must ask for the commander to assist.
