Former president of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, Prof Jerry Pillay, was appointed as dean of the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Pretoria (UP).

The Farrarmere resident will start his new position on March 1.

He joined UP in 2014 and headed the Department of Church History and Church Policy since 2015.

Until recently, he served as the president of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, a post he held for seven years.

Pillay serves on the central committee of the World Council of Churches and on numerous other international committees.

Pillay completed his honours and master’s degree in theology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

He obtained a PhD from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and in 2013, was a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the Reformed University of Debrecen, in Hungary.

He is currently spearheading a research project on African Christianity and development and researching African Christianity and what it means from a reformed tradition and perspective in Africa.

As an ordained minister, he has many years of service in the leadership of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA).

From 2004 to 2006 he served as the moderator of the general assembly of the UPCSA.

Pillay chaired and served on many committees of the general assembly and presbyteries.
