One wounded in Golden Drive shoot-out

The other four men fled the scene

A suspected illegal miner was shot and wounded this morning (February 14) during a police raid at a mine shaft near Golden Drive.

The operation was conducted by members of the EMPD Tracing Unit and SAPS Crime Intelligence, who acted on a tip-off that there were five illegal miners waiting outside the shaft to rob those who come out of it.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said when the men saw the police, they started shooting.

Police confiscated the man’s firearm and cellphone.
