“The decision to recall Jacob Zuma is final and cannot be changed,” ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule said at a media briefing on Tuesday (February 13).

According to Magashule, Zuma will not be humiliated as the ANC is engaging a leader who contributed to the country’s liberation.

Magashule together with ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa visited Zuma on Monday (February 12) to discuss the future of his reign as head of state, a meeting which reportedly lasted about 13 hours.

The ANC stressed that there has not been any motion of no-confidence.

According to Magashule, the decision was not taken because Zuma did anything wrong.

“[However] the State of the Nation address (Sona) will be addressed by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa,” he added.

“We still respect comrade Jacob Zuma.”

Magashule said despite the recall, the discussions were constructive and Zuma did not lay down conditions for stepping down as president.

“He said if we can’t agree, let the NEC take its own decisions,” Magashule said.

He added that the ANC is uncertain who the deputy president will be once Ramaphosa becomes president.
