The Gauteng SAPS is appealing for information from anyone who may know the whereabouts of five awaiting trial prisoners who escaped while being transported to the South Gauteng High Court to stand trial for murder.

According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini, the prisoners escaped on February 5 when the truck transporting them on the Golden Highway was attacked by unknown men with high-calibre firearms.

“The driver of the truck was shot and wounded on the lower body and he is in a stable condition at the hospital,” Dlamini said.

“The five awaiting trial prisoners were appearing at the South Gauteng High Court for the killing of three policemen in March and September 2015.”

Dlamini said the five escapees are considered to be dangerous and may be armed.

“Members of the public are warned not to confront them,” he said.

According to Dlamini, two of the men, Mike Dube and Sifiso Dlomo, allegedly shot and killed a policeman, Frans Malesela Ledwaba, during an armed robbery of a bakery at Park Station on March 24, 2015.

“They were part of a group of more than 10 suspects who fled the scene in two vehicles after an armed robbery,” he said.

“The policeman was killed when he responded to the robbery.”

In a separate incident, the other three escapees, Simphiwe Mutswane, Mxolisi Mazibuko and Mzwakhe, allegedly killed two policemen, WO Samuel Mchizana and WO Solly Maluleke, in Dobsonville on September 9, 2015.

“Both members were attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and were on routine investigation when they were killed,” Dlamini said.

“The officers’ firearms and dockets were stolen during the attack.”
