The police found the body of a 14-year-old girl in the backseat of a car after the girl’s father, who was driving, committed suicide.

Douglasdale SAPS spokesperson Capt Mpho Tshetlhane said the girl’s body was wrapped in a white duvet.

The area’s crime prevention unit responded to a tip-off regarding a suspicious white car on Kingfisher Road in Douglasdale on February 4.

Tshetlhane said the police members, who were wearing civilian clothing, responded to the tip-off and upon arrival found a 52-year-old-man inside the vehicle.

“The members then asked to search his vehicle, but the suspect requested they go to the police station since the members were wearing private clothing (sic),” said Tshetlhane.

The members followed the vehicle and noticed the man was speeding and not heading to the police station.

They tried to pull him over but the suspect continued driving until he reached the corner of Witkoppen Road and Malibongwe Drive.

“When he realised that he was cornered by the police, he pulled out a firearm and shot himself in the upper body,” said Tshetlhane.

The man was certified dead at the scene.

An unlicensed firearm was recovered and the motive for the murder is still unknown.

The police in Douglasdale are investigating a case of murder and an inquest docket has been opened.
