“He was diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago and was in remission until last year when he was diagnosed again,” said a member of the family.
Karolia was the owner of a family business called AA Karolia And Sons in Putfontein, which the family said he worked at for 60 years up until the week before his death.
“The business is located near Daveyton and he always tried to help the community as best he could,” the family member said.
“He always welcomed his clients and even allowed them to take items and pay later if they could not afford it.”
According to the family member, Karolia went as far as financially supporting a Daveyton resident from Grade One; the man is now an engineer.
“He also supported families with groceries and he helped many children in the Benoni and surrounding areas with bursaries,” the family member said.

The family said Karolia, who was a Benonian all his life, is known for his affection and generosity to everyone.
“He was born in Putfontein, schooled at a primary school in Putfontein, then attended William Hills High School and worked at the business after he matriculated,” the family member said.
Karolia was married to Zuleaka (Julie) Karolia who died 10 years ago.

He later married Hafsah Karolia.
He had a daughter (Razia Lorgat) who had two daughters, Fatima and the late Attiyyah Lorgat and six great-grandchildren.
Karolia is survived by the Karolia family, Hafsah, Razia, Fatima and his six great-grandchildren.
“He lived life to the fullest and he always spoke about his family like they were the greatest achievers he met,” said the family member.
