Business robbers sentenced to 15 years

Robbers serving their sentences at the Modderbee Prison.

Four business robbers, Mathew Sofika (44), Gilbert Tsiane (35), Sibusiso Mwelase (32) and Mfanafuthi Nsibande (29) were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each for business robbery.

The four men were sentenced on January 24 in the Benoni Regional Court.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube said six men robbed a store at Mayfield Square on October 11, 2016, at about 11.30am.

“The men held the employees hostage, ransacked the store and demanded cellphones and money,” said Ramaube.

“The suspects fled in different directions after their gateway vehicle hit a concrete pavement and got a puncture.”

With the assistance of community members, Nsibande was apprehended immediately after the robbery.

Sofika, Tsiane and Mwelase were arrested later on the day.

All four men are serving their sentences at the Modderbee Prison.

Putfontein SAPS station commander Lt Col Mathiane praised Det Sgt Simone Mosako for a job well done in his investigation.
