Train derails in Benoni

This follows a number of recent train accidents in South Africa.

A train’s mother coach derailed this morning (January 23) en route to Springs from Johannesburg.

The incident happened at about 7.40am near Benoni Station.

Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng said no injuries were reported.

“Technical teams are currently clearing the train,” she said.

Mofokeng said shuttles are operating between Springs and Benoni in the meantime. “Buses are operating between Benoni and Dunswart station, and trains from Johannesburg are turning at Dunswart,” she added.

She said Gauteng Metrorail is hoping to restore the line for full operation by this afternoon’s peak.

It is unclear what caused the train to derail, but Metrorail is looking into the cause of the derailment.
