Have you considered this cheaper alternative to expensive school uniforms?

Buying school uniforms could break the bank

When schools open parents are faced with the task of purchasing school uniforms, whether it’s for the first time or purchasing new items because the old ones have become too small.

Swap shops can be a convenient alternative to purchasing a school uniform for parents who can’t afford to purchase a brand new one.

The City Times spoke to two schools who run swap shops on their premises.

Tom Newby School runs a swap shop that sells second-hand uniforms along with golf shirts, shorts, swimming costumes and socks.

“It definitely costs less than your usual shopping outlet,” said Camilla Lopes who runs the shop.

According to Lopes, the shop charges cost price and does not make a profit on the purchases.

The shop is open from Monday to Thursday from 7.15am to 8am.

The shop also accepts donations that are given by parents and past learners.

Hoërskool Brandwag also has a swap shop that is run on the school premises.

“It helps to have such a shop because not all parents can afford to buy school uniforms,” said James Wright, the principal.

According to Wright, except for tracksuits, a full school uniform can be purchased at the shop.

Wright said although the clothes have been worn before, they are still of good quality.

He goes on to say another alternative would be to buy school shirts from shops such as Pep or Ackermans, where shirts are cheaper.

The shop is open before and after school as well as during break time.

According to Wright, the shop receives donations from past learners and parents.
