Maj-Gen Poobalan Subbiah, the cluster commander of the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster, said at about 7.30am a member of the public informed police about the presence of the bodies.
The commander said this came after police yesterday received reports that miners were shot underground.
“But the SAPS inspected all the open shafts in the cluster between yesterday morning until midnight, through the morning, without finding any bodies,” Subbiah added.
The discovery was made about 500m from Daveyton Road.
Four of the bodies were found grouped about 300m from the other three deceased.
Subbiah said it is believed the victims were killed underground as there was no blood or spent cartridges on scene
A murder docket will be opened.
