UPDATE: Identikit of serial rapist released

The police have released an identikit of the serial rapist who has targeted over 40 people in Benoni.

The suspect is described as short in height, slender but masculine, with a scar below his left eye, isiZulu speaking and wearing a beanie or cap.

He is believed to be in his late 30s.

The Ekurhuleni Central Cluster’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is still offering a R50 000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the man.

Over 40 cases, linked through DNA evidence, have been opened against the rapist since 2014, covering Crystal Park, Daveyton, Etwatwa and Putfontein.

The latest crime he is known to have committed was in Putfontein in November.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster police spokesperson Lt Col Mack Mngomezulu said it is alleged the man pretends to be a plumber from the municipality.

“He tells residents that he fixes leaking taps, pipes and geysers, and then residents allow him to enter their premises to check for any leaks,” said Mngomezulu.

“Once he is inside the premises and realises there is no one else in the house, he threatens victims with a knife or firearm and rapes them.”

Mngomezulu said he targets women of various ages.

He added that the man also targets children walking to school, taking them to the nearest veld where he rapes them.

The man is always on foot.

“Police are working around the clock to stop the suspect from committing more rapes,” said Mngomezulu.
