Two children die in fire

Two minors, aged 10 and 13, were burnt to death after a shack caught fire, while they were asleep today (January 10).

The incident occurred in Mayfield, Extension Six, Putfontein, at about 1am.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Capt Pheello Mothapo said it was reported that a neighbour heard people screaming for help.

“When he went outside, he saw the shack burning,” said Mothapo.

“The neighbour and other community members tried to put out the fire with water, however, the two children were certified dead by the paramedics.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.

An inquest docket has been opened at the Putfontein Police Station.
