“At Unity Secondary School, we dig into every child’s talent and unleash the best in them.”

Unity Secondary School obtained a 95.5 per cent matric pass rate for 2017.

Makhubu said the award came as a surprise.

“I felt very proud of the work done by the learners and teachers who sacrificed their time after school and over the weekends,” said Makhubu.

He said these awards will encourage them to do more in making sure that they better the lives of township children.

When asked what sets the school apart from other schools, he said: “We believe in our learners and staff and we work together as a team.

“Everyone at the school from the cleaners, administrators, SGB, educators and learners have all contributed to our success.”

Makhubu said they want to emulate the best in the country.

“We want to learn practices from other others in order to improve our results, but most importantly we want to boost our learners’ self-esteem.”

The proud principal said that they prepare their learners for matric from Grade Eight.

However, there is still work to be done.

“We don’t want to be a once-off success, but we want this to be the culture of our school,” he said.

Lastly, he thanked Lovejoy Gwesha and Isaac Masilela who are both dedicated teachers who went the extra mile in ensuring that they conducted extra classes in mathematics and physical science.
