His achievement was announced at the Gauteng Department of Education’s Top Achievers Awards Ceremony in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg on January 5.
The Unity Secondary School matriculant obtained eight distinctions in his final examinations: for IsiZulu home language, English second additional language, mathematics, life orientation, physical science, life science, business studies and religion studies.
However, life has not always been easy for the youngster.
His mother died when he was seven years old, and he had to help take care of his younger brother and nephew.
Nkosinathi said even though he had to take care of his siblings his father, Gift, always assisted where he could, so he had time to study.
The 17-year-old said he is thrilled with his results and appreciates the support he got from his teachers, family and the principal.
Not wanting to be only one to succeed, the youngster conducted extra classes for his fellow matriculants.
“There were times when teachers would not be in class for some reason and I would get up and ask the class if there was something they did not understand so that I could help them,” said Nkosinathi.
“I had a memory stick with previous question papers which I shared with them and told them to call me if they had any questions.”
Nkosinathi said the support he received from home was amazing.
“My father was very supportive; he always had interest in my studies and he would always accompany me to Daveyton Mall to catch a bus to Bedfordview to attend Saturday classes.”
His father said he is proud of Nkosinathi’s achievement.
“His results were not a surprise, he has always been hardworking and determined in everything he does,” said Gift.
“Education is the best foundation any parent can give to their children, and it is up to them what they do with that opportunity.
“We thank the school and teachers for the role they played in his achievement.”
Nkosinathi plans to study engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Unity Secondary School principal Wandile James Makhubu said if you have committed and dedicated teachers, and a supportive and co-operative school governing body, you can’t go wrong.
“We congratulate Nkosinathi and the other learners as well,” said Makhubu.
“He was selfless and he didn’t want to pass alone, he was very supportive of other learners as well.
“At Unity Secondary School we don’t waste talent, we unleash the best out of every learner.”
Nkosinathi’s message to the matriculants of 2018 is to start studying as early as possible and to use your time wisely, taking care to limit the time you spend on social media.
“Understand what you’re reading. If you don’t understand, ask; and always surround yourself with people who have the same vision as you.”
