Parents’ time running out to confirm school placements

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) urges the parents of the 31 000 learners to visit the district offices by January 13 and 14 to confirm their children’s placement in schools.

“These learners are a combination of those who had early or late applications,” GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said.

The reasoning behind this is because learners who applied on time to their preferred schools could not be accepted because the school was already full.

Mabona said these learners need to be confirmed at the alternate schools so the GDE can give the remaining spaces to other learners who are looking for schools.

The department’s online application process opened in May 2017 and closed in November 2017.

On November 16, Mabona provided statistics for online applications received for several Benoni schools:

• Actonville Primary School: 454

• Arbor Primary School: 396

• Benoni High School: 1 223

• Benoni Junior School: 599

• Benoni Primary School: 445

• Crystal Park High: 327

• Crystal Park Primary: 396

• Gekombineerde Skool Noorderlig: 291

• Hoërskool Brandwag: 295

• Hoërskool Hans Moore: 367

• Laerskool Northmead: 150

• Laerskool Rynfield: 194

According to Mabona, 10 per cent of space is reserved at each school for possible retentions and other anomalies, such as relocations due to the death of parents.

The criterion taken into consideration for acceptance into a school by the department, for each public school, is the following:

• School closest to the parent’s home or work address.

• Sibling at the school.

• Distance from the current school of a Grade Seven learner to the school applied to.
