Rottweiler dies after ‘hundreds’ of bees start to attack

A dog died shortly after it was stung by bees at an Atlasville home on December 28, the Benoni SPCA said.

The society posted on its Facebook page yesterday about the incident, after a “very distressed” call was made to them by an Atlasville resident.

“Her two dogs were being attacked by an angry swarm of bees,” the post read.

“She was alone with no one to help.

“We immediately alerted the local fire department for assistance, and raced out to the scene.”

The post went on to say that the woman managed to get her boerboel away from the bees.

“But the cross-rottweiler remained under her lapa, fighting off hundreds of insect stings to his face, ears and body,” the society said on Facebook.

“He was weak from the amount of venom absorbed into his system and could barely walk.”

Benoni SPCA staffer Seun Mahedi “attempted to rescue the dog, walking right into the line of fire, armed with only a hosepipe and a strong spray of water”.

His efforts were futile as the insects starting stinging him.

Mahedi was not badly injured.

Fire services managed to spray the bees with water.

Benoni SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore told the City Times this morning (December 29) that the rottweiler has since died.

Attempts to contact the owner of the animal were not successful.

Finnemore said people should inspect properties for insect hives.

“One may not consider them to be dangerous at first glance, but just the smallest irritation to the hive can cause a massive upset of bees, attacking anything in their path,” the manager said.

She advised members of the public to have hives removed in a humane manner and to call the society for contact numbers of reputable bee removal specialists.
