Police arrest five who were apparently planning to commit Benoni robbery

Five suspects were arrested after police received a tip-off that the men were planning to rob a store in Kingsway, Benoni.

According to Lt Col Mack Mngomezulu, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster police spokesperson, the Ekurhuleni cluster tactical task team arrested the suspects on December 26 near the Nellmapius off-ramp on the R21.

Unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found in their possession.

Mngomezulu said the police’s crime intelligence unit received a tip-off from an informer.

“The arrests were made about an hour after the unit received the information,” he said.

The suspects are now facing charges of conspiracy to commit a business robbery, reckless driving and being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
