UPDATE: Sexual Assault Clinic to reopen following BCT article

The Benoni-based Sexual Assault Clinic will reopen its doors on January 2 at its new premises.

This non-profit organisation will now operate from The Greater Benoni Child Welfare, in Northmead.

The new development comes after an article published in the City Times on November 24 about the possible closure of the organisation due to financial constraints.

The organisation provides expert medico-legal examinations of young victims (under the age of 12) who have fallen victim to sexual or physical assault.

Founder and director of the Sexual Assault Clinic, Christa Rollin, said through the article they have received numerous calls. However, they were also contacted by The Greater Benoni Child Welfare.

“I together with Elsie Labuschagne (director at The Greater Benoni Child Welfare) have entered into a working partnership,” said Rollin.

“Both the organisations are NPOs that are facing the same struggle of financial sustainability, but most importantly, we have a vision for child protection in the community of Benoni.”

Rollin said through the partnership they have set out plans to implement certain programmes and systems in 2018 for the protection of all children in Benoni and surrounding communities.

“We will work with other non-profit or non-government organisations, governmental bodies and civil society to ensure effective protection of children against abuse, maltreatment and exploitation and to ensure speedy assistance of child victims of abuse.”

However, the organisation is still in need of funds.

In the previous article Rollin said the clinic is dependent on sponsorships and donations to keep its doors open.

“Our main sponsor for the past six years has unexpectedly terminated the clinic’s service, leaving us with no income,” said the Rynfield resident.

The clinic has been a service provider for a local security company.

The organisation was founded in 2011.

“We want to implore the community to support the Sexual Assault Clinic and The Greater Benoni Child Welfare in any way possible to enable us to make child protection a priority in our community.”
