New child and youth centre unveiled

Gauteng MEC for infrastructure development, Jacob Mamabolo together with MEC for social development, Nandi Mayathula Khoza officially opened the newly built offices for the Mary Moodley Child and Youth Care Centre.

The opening was on December 13 at the centre’s premises in Tsessebe Street, Apex.

The building, valued at approximately R15-million, comprises various administrative offices designed to enhance a feeling of openness and a sense of shared space.

The newly built Mary Moodley Child and Youth Care Centre offices were officially unveiled on December 13. Cutting the ribbon were Noxolo Goniwe (acting director of the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development); Clr Ebrahim Motara, MMC of infrastructure services; MEC for social development, Nandi Mayathula Khoza; Clr Robert Mashego and MEC for infrastructure development, Jacob Mamabolo.

The building also accommodates offices, conferencing facilities, shared office spaces, network data-points, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system and other support services.

Clr Sinethemba Matiwane (Ward 73) welcomed the attendees and shared a few words of appreciation with members of the Gauteng government.

He said the new building is a huge improvement from the previous one and is a huge step for the community as it will benefit the whole region.

The centre now has space to cater for 120 children at a time.

Mamabolo said: “We have to make sure the beneficiaries use our facilities and that staff who provide the service do so in an excellent, conducive manner under the best conditions.”

“The facility is enhanced with the latest technology. The building can also adapt to certain weather conditions and also has a water harvesting facility.

“This building is an investment in the people of Ekurhuleni and we urge the community to take care of it.”

The building is named in honour of unionist and anti-apartheid activist, Mary Moodley who fought for the freedom of South Africans.

MEC Mamabolo, MEC Khoza and other stakeholders where given a tour of the building by project manager Siyoyisa Nuku.
