The East Rand Hiking Club was founded around 1983 by Chris Lerm.
Alex Elshove, East Rand Hiking Club chairperson, said the club was established primarily to give a group of hikers an opportunity to get on the established trails for exercise and companionship.
“Apart from the companionship and challenges offered by hiking, the places we normally vist offer pristine natural beauty, which is only accessible to hikers,” said Elshove.
“The club has a strong dedication to conservation and environmental education.”
The club has 60 members – their youngest hiker is eight and their oldest hiker is 80 years old.
Elshove added that anyone interested is welcome to join the club.
