Daveyton youngster leads youth development

Tebogo Mphahlele is determined to make a change in the lives of young people.

The Daveyton resident started the Lead Young Foundation on September 23.

Mphahlele has been nominated for an award by the Women of Stature as the woman of the year, in the youth ambassador category.

The award ceremony is set to take place on March 24.

“I want to show young people you are never too young or too black to do anything,” she said.

“We need to empower young people so that our country can grow.”

As the sole founder of this initiative, the Grade 11 St Francis College learner also collects textbooks, study guides and reading books as part of her outreach programme.

To date she has collected and donated 300 books to various schools within the Daveyton area.

Her brother, Mpho Mphahlele, helps her with the financial side of the foundation and helps her liaise with sponsors.

Mphahlele said through the foundation, she hopes to connect young presenters and entrepreneurs with other young people in the community.

Her future plans include generating enough money to invest money and resources into young people’s start-up businesses.

Mphahlele would like to expand the foundation to other parts of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng as a whole.

“There are people from the Eastern Cape who would like this kind of assistance, so I hope I will also be able to expand to other areas in and around South Africa,” she said.

Apart from the foundation, Mphahlele has dreams of studying actuarial science and hopes to enter the Miss SA competition.

“If I won, I would become the female ambassador for girls who come from disadvantaged backgrounds,” she said.

“This would give me the opportunity to encourage young people that it is possible to reach their dreams no matter what they are.”
