Lack of maintenance leaves Northmead park in bad state

Some Northmead residents are concerned about the state of Cosmos Park.

According to Jolene van der Westhuizen, the park on the corner of Kosmos and Elderwood streets has been in a bad state for about five years.

“The park has so much potential – all we want is for the park to be maintained,” she said.

She said they only see a tractor at the park twice a year, the last of which was two weeks ago.

According to van der Westhuizen, municipal workers dug trenches in the park and left heaps of dirt next to the trenches.

She pointed out how the park’s play equipment is falling apart.

“My kids can’t come and swing here, so I’ve had to put up swings in my own backyard,” she said.

Ward 23 Clr André du Plessis said residents should communicate with their councillors about such issues.

“As a councillor we have the means to enquire about getting new playground equipment,” he said.

Du Plessis emphasised the importance of making councillors aware of issues of concern.

Employees from the metro’s Parks Department were seen inspecting the play equipment on November 29 – the same day the City Times visited the area.

An inquiry has been sent to the municipality.
