Chill Bru – a hot business in the making

Craving hot sauce?

Just chill, bru – Chill Bru has you covered.

Father-and-son combination Daniel (17) and Henk Herbst had a jar of home-made chilli sauce in the fridge on October 23.

Exactly a month after that, the former Farrarmere residents sold 653 jars of the same sauce.

The success of this blooming business venture has hit social media, with people from far and wide posting pictures of their newly-purchased Chill Bru.

It is a recipe Henk has used for over 10 years.

Two “secret” ingredients in the concoction are courtesy of a Mozambiquean barman who recommended the inclusion of the ingredients.

“He (Daniel) came up with the idea to jar and sell the sauce – the idea never crossed my mind,” Henk said at his Atlasville home.

The proud father, who doesn’t take profit but helps his son buy and deliver stock, said he told Daniel to “make a plan” to fund his upcoming Ballito holiday.

“My dad would say: ‘Would you rather sit on the couch or make money’?” Daniel said.

Henk said his words are bearing fruit.

“He has more than enough [money], he could go to Mauritius.”

The input cost of R2 200 was enough to buy a blender (two have already burnt out) and to get the ball rolling.

But it does not end there.

The pair took three bottles of the sauce to a local fruit and vegetable store to see if they would stock it.

Henk failed to reach an agreement with the owner on the price, and the two walked out, but Daniel was not sold on abandoning his idea.

Daniel told his dad: “No dad, let’s sell it cheaper.”

The owner’s reply?

“I like your way of thinking.”

Henk added: “The only condition attached to the agreement with the store owner, is that Daniel’s consignment stock sells like he promised them it would.”

The father-and-son team are also serious about keeping customers happy which saw them deliver one bottle to a new customer in Birchleigh at 11pm.
