William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, said a seven-seater Toyota Avanza was transporting 14 children along Cloverdene Road when the driver apparently crashed into a vehicle pulling out of a driveway.

“The driver of the Avanza lost control and hit a lamp pole,” said Ntladi.

“Two children were ejected from the car.”

He said the female victims who were flung from the vehicle, aged 11 and 14, were both declared dead at the scene.
The remaining 12 children were transported to the Sunshine Hospital by private paramedic services.
The driver of the Avanza was also taken to hospital.
The three occupants of the second vehicle, a woman and two children, were not hospitalised.
“We are devastated that one of our Grade Four scholars passed away and other students are being treated in hospital,” said Mary Busschau, marketing officer at SPARK Schools.
“The parents of the children involved have been informed and we have arranged for trauma counsellors to be available at SPARK Rynfield to assist the children and teachers in processing the devastating events of this morning.”
