Bring Christmas joy to old people

It’s that time of the year again where The Old People’s Home prepares for the festive season and thoughts turn to residents who are less fortunate than others.

“Since the residents in frail care cannot always take part in events, we want them to feel special during the festive season,” said Saskia Badenhorst, activities coordinator at the home.

Badenhorst is asking members of the public to open their pockets and contribute to the annual Advent calendar, which has been running since 2012.

“Each day a resident from frail care gets the chance to open the Advent calendar and distribute the gifts among the residents,” said Badenhorst.

“This simple project has become a fixture in The Old People’s Home and it is through the help of the sponsors that we can continue running it and bring some joy into the lives of the frail.”

The calendar consists of 25 boxes filled and numbered for the 24 days leading up to Christmas.

Every day a different resident gets the chance to open the calendar and distribute the gifts among the frail-care residents.

According to Badenhorst, they are short of four days’ boxes.

“People are welcome to donate,” she said.

Sponsors can make a donation of R300 or more to reserve a day on the Advent calendar.

“We then fill it with treats and put a portion of the money towards a present for Christmas Day,” she said.
