Are you paying the correct amount for the refuse collection charge?

The metro has been charging a Benoni Agricultural Holdings resident, almost double, for refuse collection for about six months.

The City Times has reported on Carol Thompson’s battle to get clarity on a monthly refuse collection charge of R298.01 (including VAT).

Residents trash refuse collection charges

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe again confirmed the charge for the service on November 11.

He said properties smaller than 300m² and less than R300 000 in value, will be charged R122.35 for the 2017/18 financial year.

Properties valued at more than R300 000 should be billed a monthly fee of R150.92 for the same financial period.

Despite this, Thompson is still paying the inflated amount although she only has one wheelie bin.

She said an official from the municipality visited her home on November 9 and admitted that the charge is incorrect.

The person assured her it would be rectified.

The Gum Road resident wants the metro to credit her for the extra money she has paid.

Numerous emails over the past few months have been sent to the EMM to ask them to investigate Thompson’s query, but no comment has been received.
