Mining permits: public ‘must request meeting’

Two mining permit applications were advertised in the City Times last week (November 9).

ZFM Trading and Mosaic are both applying to mine gold ore on the surface dump on portion one of the farm Modderfontein.

This is the same location as that applied for by Nendiwave, a company previously reported on by the City Times.

Nendiwave plans to mine copper, gold, nickel, platinum group metals, pyrite, silver, sulphur and uranium from a mine dump on portions one and three – each comprising five hectares – of the same farm.

Both ZFM Trading and Mosaic employ consultancy company Earthkeepers (Pty) Ltd.

Earthkeepers spokesperson Nhlanhla Ncube said ZFM Trading and Mosaic would only be mining gold ore.

Ncube said a public participation meeting has not been scheduled, adding such a meeting is not compulsory unless the responses generated by the permit application adverts indicate that community members want a meeting.

When the City Times asked for the basic assessment reports compiled by the companies, Ncube explained that he is currently out of the country and will send the reports as soon as he is able to do so.

Community members who want to ensure a public participation meeting is held can phone Ncube on 078 8176623 or email comments to nhamhlabrian@gmail.com
