Father who beat son sentenced to 13 years

Msizi Nkosikhona Khumalo was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in the Benoni Regional Court on November 10.

He was found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), child abuse, possession of drugs and dealing in dagga.

Khumalo was arrested on October 26, 2016.

Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe said on October 25, 2016, police received a call from a primary school in Etwatwa regarding a child who was being disruptive.

“When police arrived at the school they questioned the 12-year-old boy and asked him why he was misbehaving,” said Maqabe.

“The child told police he was tired of being beaten up by his parents and that he wanted to commit suicide.”

Maqabe said after further questioning he revealed that his parents used him as a drug mule in Springs, Reiger Park and Kempton Park.

Police went to the boy’s house where the mother was arrested for being in possession of dagga; Khumalo ran away.

The next day, Khumalo was found at the house and he was arrested.

They found him in possession of dagga and mandrax.

In June, the mother turned state witness and charges against her were dropped.

The child is receiving counselling.
