UPDATE: Suspected house robbers ditch gun in Civic Lake

Two suspected house robbers who were arrested on November 2 for being in possession of house break-in implements will remain in police custody until their next court appearance in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on November 13.

The duo, aged 24 and 25 years old, will now be charged for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm that was used during a house robbery in August in Benoni North.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said a firearm was found at the Civic Lake on November 6 after the suspects tried to run into the lake as they were being pursued.

“They threw a black plastic bag into the lake on November 2 and the North East Rand Water Police Diving Unit was only able to retrieve the bag on November 6,” said Sekele.

“When police unwrapped the bag, they found a 9mm pistol with a serial number and 13 live rounds of ammunition in the magazine.”

The arrest was made by the Takkie Team led by Capt Imber Groesbeek and sector managers WO Jaco Myburgh and Sgt Vernon Alladipan, reservists, CPF and security companies during their crime prevention operation in the area.
