Lawyer who pumped petrol while studying now inspiring others

Young LLB graduate Lesego Tsatseng Rantsho is using his life story to encourage learners to make school their first priority.

He is the founder of a non-profit organisation called Sgela 1st, which was founded in 2016.

Rantsho worked as a part-time petrol attendant in order to make ends meet while studying at the University of Johannesburg.

The organisation gives motivational talks in schools to encourage learners to take their education seriously and to consider tertiary education.

“With our motivational talks we share stories of hope, the importance of getting good results and opportunities available after high school,” said Rantsho.

The Daveyton resident said one of the things he tells learners during his motivational talks is that they need to think about the pain they are causing their parents.

“When you get into trouble at school or you don’t perform, it not only affects you, but it also affects your parents,” he said.

The 23-year-old had to change high schools three times before he realised that he needed to stop his mischievous behaviour in Grade 11.

He said that is what inspired him to be the change he wants to see in his community.

When asked what he hopes to achieve through the organisation, he said he wants youngsters to acknowledge that education is the key to many opportunities.

He said there are too few role models in the townships.

“We need people who have succeeded from the townships to share their stories with young people, so they can be inspired to dream beyond their situations,” he said.

Rantsho looks up to Sibusiso ‘DJ Sbu’ Leope.

“I love and respect him and aspire to be like him because he is not ashamed to go back to the townships in order to make a meaningful contribution in young people’s lives.”
