Community invited to meeting about Benoni mining

The postponed public participation meeting for the mine dump reclamation project on the farm Vlakfontein was held on November 7 at the Benoni Country Club.

The proposed mine dump is next to Golden Drive, about 1.5km from Snake Road.

The consultancy company for Thumela Logistix CC, Archean Resources, hosted the meeting and members of the community were, for a second time, unsatisfied with the company’s responses.

Disputes regarding the legitimacy of the mining operations were mentioned and community members accused Thumela Logistix CC and Archean Resources of not being transparent enough.

Members representing the Greater Benoni Residents Committee (GBRC) said the company is lacking crucial communication with the community.

The GBRC has been inactive since 2012.

The committee is in the process of being reinstated and according to Howard Nel, a ‘dormant-member’, the committee has represented the community in mining applications.

Dudley Whittle, Howard Nel and Nick Haywood are temporarily organising meetings and community communication with Archean Resources.

An official GBRC meeting will be held on November 9 at 6.30pm at the Benoni Municipal Council Chambers.

This meeting is open to the general public.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the way forward regarding the mining operations, to elect a working committee, a chairperson and a media liaison officer.

All affected members of the community are invited to attend.
