Thousands of fruit trees destined for Wattville

As part of the O R Tambo centenary celebration, the MMC of Environmental Affairs and Waste Management in Ekurhuleni, Clr Ndosi Shongwe and the Green Development Foundation donated 2 500 guava trees to the community of Wattville.

The MMC of Environmental Affairs and Waste Management in Ekurhuleni, Clr Ndosi Shongwe, helps plant a tree at the St Luke’s Methodist Church in Wattville.

A symbolic tree was planted at the St Luke’s Methodist Church on October 31.

A total of 5 000 trees will be planted throughout the three wards in Wattville at the end of the project.

“These trees will combat climate change and guava has Vitamin C, which will help fight flu in winter,” said Neil van Zijl, director at the Green Development Foundation.

“The more trees, the better.”

Van Zijl said the organisation plans to plant about 20 indigenous trees at the O R Tambo Precinct.

Residents were encouraged to help the municipality change the environment that they live in.

The MMC made reference to Adelaide and O R Tambo always ensuring that the people of Wattville had enough food to eat and how the municipality wanted to keep the legacy going through the planting of trees in the community.

Flowers were also handed out to the residents to promote greenery in the community.

Shongwe also addressed the issue of waste management in the area and urged residents to stop burning rubbish and to rather take their rubbish to dump sites within the community.
