Barc continues weekly outreach

Benoni Animal Rescue Centre (Barc) conducts an outreach project every Wednesday in Barcelona informal settlement.

The organisation gives out food, medical treatments and conducts sterilisations for animals in the area.

“There are so many dogs that need help,” said Charmaine Woest, director at Barc.

According to Woest, both the owners and animals are registered in the organisation’s books.

About 150 to 200 animals are taken care of each Wednesday.

This initiative was started three years ago after Barc identified a need within the community.

“It’s a community that loves its animals,” she said.

At the weekly outreach, Barc takes with about 800 bags and 75 tins of dog food, as well as cat kibbles and about 50 cans of cat food.

The organisation does not only do weekly outreach programmes, but assists with adoptions, home inspections and takes animals to a local vet should there be animals they can’t sterilise on site.

A person who has benefitted from this cause is Hector Nhlapo, who has 14 dogs.

The dogs he has are strays he has taken in from the community.

Nhlapo has been doing this since 2013.

“I love them more than words can describe,” he said.

“When a dog is still a puppy I even allow it to sleep in my bed.”

Nhlapo has named all his dogs and makes sure he makes time to get to know each of them.

“I sit and talk to them like I would talk to a person,” he said.
