Benonian captures image of goliath heron feasting on carp

Goliath herons love Benoni - just ask Jan de Beer who submitted this photograph to the City Times.

He captured the bird at Lakefield’s Korsman Bird Sanctuary.

“[These birds] normally choose places so deep in the bush even the most determined birder cannot get to them,” said de Beer. Yet a pair – for the second time now in less than a year – this season again selected Korsman as just the place to raise their young.”

He said the pair’s chicks will soon leave their nest.

“Now the laborious incubation of the two eggs – and constant fishing to feed ever-hungry chicks – is over and it seems the young chicks are ready to leave a somewhat battered sedge nest to start a life of their own,” de Beer added.

A recent Sunday’s bulky carp meal – depicting an adult goliath heron swallowing a fish at least 30cms long – was probably a celebratory feast for one of the parents.

“At last… a carp all to myself. No need to share it with the kids!” was surely the most likely thought running through its head.
