The time to clean is now

The Morehill Community Safety Group initiated a community clean-up project that took place on the morning of October 28.

Roughly 65 people gathered at the site – located behind the Morehill mine dump – in Landau Street to clean up the area.

Citizens cleared building rubble, vegetation that was out of control and domestic trash.

Andrea Vowles, who lives in Morehill, organised the clean-up with the help of fellow resident Dell Rile, who runs the Stand Up Benoni Facebook page.

Vowles said the activity was not only done to clean the area, but also to encourage people to take pride in their areas.

Dell added: “If you look at the entrance to Springs, you will be ashamed to say you live in Benoni because they keep their town neat and clean and we ought to do the same.”

“If Springs can keep their town clean, why can’t we?” asked Vowles.

Vowles said the next step was to identify more areas in need of cleaning and to try to get as many Benoni residents involved in the cleaning of those areas.

“If an area is clean people will be discouraged from littering,” she argued.

She is also of the opinion that the municipality cannot clean the areas as much as they should, and said it was now the responsibility of residents to clean Benoni.
