Hans Moore responds to parent criticising school

Hoërskool Hans Moore principal Ertjies Hattingh released a statement commenting on why the school sent learners home who wore black to protest farm murders on October 30.

This was after the City Times published an article after an anonymous parent phoned and complained that the school is not teaching children to stand up for what they believe in.

The article sparked mixed reaction on the City Times’ Facebook page.

In the statement, Hattingh said: “Hoërskool Hans Moore is firstly an educational institution” and that [the school] support several causes.”

He explained the school is involved with Cansa, Rotary and he said it contributes to organisations to alleviate poverty.

“Learners are aware that we welcome initiatives, but it has to be approved by the planning committee of our school on Thursdays,” Hattingh explained.

He urged parents to follow protocol if they want the school to participate in deserving causes for the school to organise events effectively.

“However, the school cannot allow learners to disobey our code of conduct,” he said and explained that “events that are planned haphazardly will not be allowed.”
