Crime statistics: Over 340 people raped across Benoni

Over 340 people were raped across the precincts of Benoni’s six police stations, which are some of the stations within the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster.

The minister of police, Fikile Mbalula, released the nation’s crime statistics for the period April 2016 to March 2017 on October 24.

The City Times tallied the crimes for the six Benoni police stations: Actonville, Benoni, Crystal Park, Daveyton, Etwatwa and Putfontein.

The numbers for some of the crimes, of each station, were compared to the previous statistics, for the period April 2015 to March 2016.

These are some of the numbers:

Murder (184 cases)

– Actonville (20 – increase of 10)
– Benoni (55 – decrease of three)
– Crystal Park (12 – increase of five)
– Daveyton (42 – same as previous period)
– Etwatwa (35 – decrease of six)
– Putfontein (20 – decrease of two)

Rape (346)
– Actonville (32 – increase of four)
– Benoni (54 – decrease of seven)
– Crystal Park (24 – decrease of five)
– Daveyton (76 – same as previous period)
– Etwatwa (111 – increase of 19)
– Putfontein (49 – decrease of one)

Carjacking (257)
– Actonville (26 – increase of two)
– Benoni (61 – decrease of 10)
– Crystal Park (20 – decrease of 10)
– Daveyton (90 – increase of 28)
– Etwatwa (42 – increase of 10)
– Putfontein (18 – same as previous period)

Robbery at residential premises (237)
– Actonville (15 – increase of one)
– Benoni (94 – increase of six)
– Crystal Park (24 – increase of 10)
– Daveyton (28 – increase of 11)
– Etwatwa (49 – increase of 29)
– Putfontein (27 – increase of 15)

Drug-related crime (1 516)
– Actonville (253 – increase of 95)
– Benoni (472 – increase of 200)
– Crystal Park (46 – increase of eight)
– Daveyton (326 – decrease of 13)
– Etwatwa (298 – increase of 105)
– Putfontein (121 – increase of 54)

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (973) 
– Actonville (119 – increase of 41)
– Benoni (481 – increase of 188)
– Crystal Park (62 – decrease of 44)
– Daveyton (97 – decrease of three)
– Etwatwa (80 – same as previous period)
– Putfontein (134 – increase of 52).
