Kids Haven turns 25

Kids Haven celebrated its 25th birthday at the Kids Haven Village in MacKenzie Park on Friday.

About 350 people attended the event.

As part of the celebrations, some of the children were part of a flash mob that performed on the day.

“It feels like yesterday – I remember so clearly how it all began,” said Moira Simpson, founder of Kids Haven.

“Kids Haven has evolved and grown with the needs of the kids.”

According to Simpson, future plans for the organisation include building a therapy centre which will provide services to children who don’t live at Kids Haven.

“I would like to buy the buildings around Kids Haven in Cranbourne and create a therapy centre and shelter just for girls to separate them from the boys,” she said.

Simpson mentioned that these plans need funding.

She said she is grateful for the donations that were given to the organisation over the years.

“The community has been amazing but we still need more donations,” she said.

Kids Haven was founded by Moira Simpson in 1992 in a derelict building on Snake Road.

The aim was to be the ‘mother’ to children who were crying out for love.

“The child who ends up on the street is giving a loud and clear signal of alarm that something is going wrong in the family, at school, in society,” she said.

Kids Haven is a home that cares for vulnerable children. It gives these often forgotten members of our society, who live on the street, a place to call ‘home’.
