UPDATE: At least 591 houses affected in Etwatwa, Putfontein

The storm that occurred on October 9 has left at least 591 houses in Emaphupheni in Etwatwa and at Mogoba in Putfontein damaged.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has vowed to assist in rebuilding three pensioners’ homes that were destroyed in Etwatwa.

Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina visited the area on October 13.

“The rebuilding of the houses forms part of the City’s weekly Siyaqhuba Mayoral Outreach programme,” said EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

On the day, food parcels and blankets were donated to the affected families.

MMC for Community Safety, Vivienne Chauke, together with MMC for Water and Electricity, Clr Tiisetso Nketle, visited Etwatwa on October 10.

Their visit was to assess the damage caused by the storm with the aim of assuring affected families that the municipality would do their utmost to speed up repairs necessary to bring back normality to the families in the area.

The MMCs were accompanied by ward councillors, Eskom technicians and representatives from various EMM departments.

The areas mostly affected are Emaphupheni, Ebumnandini in Etwatwa and Mogoba in Putfontein.

Community members who would like to assist can drop off donations at the Putfontein and Etwatwa police stations.
