Woman warns public after being held at knife point

A case of robbery with a weapon other than a firearm was opened at the Benoni Police Station on Tuesday morning (October 3) after a woman was held at knife point.

The alleged incident took place at Oakfields Shopping Centre in Northmead.

“I was at the centre around 6.20am because I was going to gym,” said Maralyn van Staden.

“I stopped at the FNB ATM at Oakfields to withdraw cash and saw a silver Mercedes coming towards me from the Pick n Pay parking side.”

According to van Staden, she withdrew the money and then suddenly felt a knife against her back.

“The person took my card and withdrew the rest of the money that I could withdraw for the day,” she said.

“After withdrawing the money, the person left.”

According to van Staden the thief was accompanied by another person who waited in the Mercedes during the robbery.

“You would think you are safe in a complex,” van Staden said.

“People need to be so cautious when they are at the ATM.”

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele said the festive season is approaching.

“People need to be cautious at ATMs, especially during the festive season,” Sekele said.

“When criminals see an opportunity they will take it.”
