The launch follows concerns raised by learners, parents and the school about what happens to youngsters, particularly those from Learners with Special Educative Needs (LSEN) schools, after they leave.

“In LSEN schools, children feel like they have limited career choices after school,” said Bosch, who is the head of resource at Belvedere.
“We compiled a list of career paths for learners who are looking for careers that are available to them.”
The compilation provides 22 career categories with sub-categories as guidance for the learner.
Some of these categories include administration and business support, automotive, beauty, building, electrical, elementary, food, land and bush clearing, metal work and call centre services to name a few.
If the learner wants to become a personal assistant, then the file provides information about institutions that can cater for the learner and what is required academically from the learner.
“We invited a mixture of mainstream and LSEN schools – a total of 51 – to let them know about this package,” Bosch said.
“This is to better help learners in their exit strategy in both mainstream and LSEN schools.”
Together with the principals and life orientation educators from the 51 schools, members from Ekurhuleni North District (part of the Gauteng Department of Education) were also invited to understand this career package.
Corné Badenhorst, who is a social worker and therapist at Belvedere School, said the inception of this idea started in June last year.
“There is a CD in the file which will be given to the 51 schools present,” Badenhorst said.
“Every year I will update the CD and resend it to the school.”
According to Badenhorst, the inception of this career package will assist learners in making informed decisions about their future.
“It will also give parents a sense of direction about their child’s future,” Badenhorst explained.
