But it does not end there.
According to Tania Forrest-Smith, who has been an activist at the Benoni Bunny Park for about two years but has since resigned from an interest group at the park, the woman is expected to deposit another R20 000 into her account in November.
The R40 000 will see to the sterilisation of 114 bunnies.
This is in addition to the benevolent person’s contribution to the park in the form of animal feed for over a year.
Forrest-Smith said the money will be paid into a veterinarian’s bank account, which will be used for the sterilisation of the park’s bunnies.
She said she was overcome with gratitude when she received the call from the woman, who does not want her identity revealed.
“It was unbelievable to me that somebody could have so much compassion, and we are not talking small change,” said Forrest-Smith.
Danielle Hugo, of The Public Save the Bunnies Group Facebook group, said the money will help greatly to save animals’ from an uncertain future.
Hugo and other volunteers have for months caught rabbits which have wandered out of the park.
The group has seven rabbits at this stage which are waiting to be sterilised, with about 30 people who want to adopt the animals.
She said more could be caught if they had access to the park, explaining that the donation of money means there is greater reason to capture as many as possible.
Hugo has called on the public to follow their Facebook page to enquire about helping the group catch rabbits on Sundays and adopting rabbits.
“There are some beautiful creatures there,” she said.
“If we could get some of them, we could get a home for them in no time.”
