Police warn community about scam

Police are warning the public against people who are pretending to be police officers and asking victims of vehicle theft for money.

This warning comes after a few incidents of criminals employing this modus operandi were brought to the attention of police recently.

Capt Ramothakhi Maqabe, Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson, said when a stolen car is recovered, no amount of money is required from the victim to deliver their car.

“The SAPS does not tow stolen or recovered vehicles to the complainant’s home,” said Maqabe.

“Furthermore, we do not charge money for towing nor ask anyone to deposit money at a money market.”

If anyone receives a suspicious phone call or has been a victim of this scam, visit the nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
