Police issue warning to motorists

The Benoni police have asked motorists to be more vigilant following a number of recent reports pertaining to hijackings, theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said they are appealing to the community to be more vigilant at shopping centres, gyms, schools (when there are functions or while collecting children), hospitals (during visiting hours) and driveways.

“Once you’ve parked your car, double check if it’s locked,” said Sekele.

“We urge drivers not to leave valuables lying around such as laptops, cell phones, wallets or anything that might attract criminals to break into motor vehicles.”

Sekele said that when you’re driving, you need to take note of the vehicle behind to ensure drivers do not follow you and later commit a crime against you.

“People must try hard not to create an opportunity for criminals to commit crime,” she said.

“Once again we are pleading with the community to work with the police in the fight against crime.”

To report crime, contact the Benoni SAPS on 011 747 0053/0230 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
