School cultivates reading culture

Benoni Muslim School recently initiated a number of activities to encourage its learners to read.

“The character dress-up day by the foundation phase learners was an occasion that generated much excitement,” a school representative said in a statement.

“All the learners dressed up in the costumes of their favourite characters and presented short reviews of the book they have read.”

This was followed by a presentation of the theatrical group, Hooked on Books who also enacted scenes from various classical tales.

Parents were invited to a book sale where mothers and their children could purchase good reading material.

September 8 was earmarked as ‘bookmark day’ where learners created an array of designed bookmarks.

This was followed by 30 minutes of the ‘drop all and read’ programme where every learner in primary school was involved in a reading activity.

“With the re-opening of the school library, it is hoped that learners will once more take more interest in reading,” the school added.
