Man arrested for possession of dagga and illegal mining equipment

A man (34) is being detained at the Benoni Police Station after being found in possession of explosives, explosive devices and dagga.

On September 21, members of Benoni Flying Squad, W/O Joseph Makamu, W/O Elvis Langa, W/O Grant Giblin and W/O Pieter Conradie, together with EMPD Tracing Unit, conducted an operation near Golden Drive shaft 18.

Sgt Angel Mkwanazi, communication officer for the Benoni Flying Squad, said the operation resulted in a recovery of 13 blasting cartridges, 22 connector capped fuses, one length of five meters and one length of six meters detonating explosives.

The arrestee was found in possession of 10g of dagga to the estimated street value of R200.

Further investigation will be conducted to see if the suspect is linked to other cases of illegal mining.

The suspect is due to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of illegal mining equipment and possession of dagga.
