Recycling plant in Actonville causes concern for residents

Some residents are unhappy with the unhygienic conditions caused by the Vukuzenzele Nkoza Recycling Secondary Cooperative Limited on Mayet Drive and want it to be relocated.

The plant is situated at the center of the sports precinct ground in Actonville.

“We are hosting a tournament in October but there is dirt overflowing onto the field,” said Benoni All Stars chairperson, Farouk Jallal.

Ward 29 Clr Haseena Ismail said the complaint about the location of the plant has been pending since 2015.

“Residents are complaining about the infestation of rodents, mosquitoes and insects,” she said.

“Residents in the area are not keen on recycling because of the negative health and environmental impact on their everyday lives.”

If the plant is moved, the Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC) department has offered to maintain the area where the plant is currently situated.

“I am willing to move the plant to an alternate site because it will help us to get to pile our recyclables properly,” said the chairperson of the recycling plant, Thulo Magudulela.

Magudulela also added that the waste is removed every Wednesday, but the compactor trucks break down constantly and the garbage bags are left to pile up for weeks.

“I use my truck and petrol to remove the loads of garbage which can total about five trips,” he said.

Ismail said she has contacted the MMC for environmental and waste management, Gladys Shongwe, and the co-operatives to discuss the matter and to speed up the process of moving the plant to an alternate site.

The City Times emailed the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) on August 30, but no comment had been received at the time of publishing.
