UPDATE: Man recovering after hit by stray bullet in Benoni

A driver for a local business, Moti Hosin, is being treated for a bullet wound after he was apparently shot in the cross-fire between police and three criminals on Woburn Avenue.

The Actonville resident was hospitalised on September 14 after he was found by police on Prince’s Avenue with a bullet wound to his back following the shooting which occurred on Woburn Avenue at about 11.30am.

He is receiving treatment at the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

Hosin said he drove on Woburn Avenue, towards Dunswart just after 11am.

“When I was at the corner of Woburn Avenue and Bunyan Street, I heard three gun shots,” said Hosin.

“I didn’t realise that it was all happening behind me.”

“He said as he approached the robot on Bunyan Street, he heard a gunshot coming from behind the white Hyundai H100 he was driving.

“However, I’m not sure if it came from the police or the suspected criminals.”

Hosin said he stopped the vehicle on Voortrekker Street, climbed out, went to the back of the car and saw a bullet hole in the car.

“When I got back to the driver’s seat, I saw a hole [on the car seat], but I didn’t realise I was shot,” he added.

Hosin said he continued to drive until just after the Benoni Plaza on Prince’s Avenue.

“I couldn’t drive anymore and asked my assistant to get help,” he told the City Times.

His assistant called his employer, who called police and the ambulance.

A case of attempted murder was opened at the Benoni SAPS.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said two crime prevention officers were patrolling at Northmead Square earlier on the day, when they saw a green BMW being driven suspiciously slowly around the parking lot.

“A Nissan Qashqai with three men followed the BMW,” said Sekele.

“As police were monitoring the two vehicles, the vehicles drove down O’Reilly Merry Street.”

Sekele said police followed the vehicles all the way to Voortrekker Street.

Then the BMW turned on Kemston Avenue and the Nissan Qashqai continued along Voortrekker Street.

“Police continued to follow the Nissan Qashqai,” Sekele added.

“When police tried to stop the driver, one of the men took out a gun, pointed it at the police and started shooting from the back window.”

Police fired back at the alleged suspects and the vehicle sped off towards Harrison Street.

“Police lost sight of the vehicle,” said Sekele.

The BMW was later found at Lakeside Mall and police confiscated two cellphones from the vehicle.

Upon further investigation, police discovered that both vehicles are involved in various criminal activities such as bank followings.

No arrests had been made by Monday afternoon.
